Do Not Upgrade iLife Before You Read This

January 6, 2009

Most of you know the drill here… it was just announced that Apple has a brand-new version of iLife which includes iWeb so I’m going to need to look at this version to see if it will work with the existing themes I’ve created.

If you MUST have the new iLife today, please do yourself a favor and move your current iWeb application icon OUT of the Applications folder and into another folder where you can save it and continue to use it. That way when you install the new version of iLife, you will have both versions of iWeb available. Unless Apple has some mechanism to find and delete all previous versions of iWeb, this method *should* work. If it does not, please ensure you have a copy in back-up somewhere, either in Time Machine or some other back-up drive. If you do not, then you may lose the ability to update your site until I can recreate all the themes for this version of iWeb.

I’m listening to the keynote right now and will hit the Apple store afterwards to get a copy of iLife. I should know by late afternoon US CST where we stand with this and I’ll keep you posted.

:)

NOTE: It was mentioned that iLife would “ship” at the end of the month but it was not said if that’s only online orders. It was not clear if iLife would be in stores today so again, stay tuned. I’ll have it as soon as it’s available, today or end of the month.

If it is shipping at the end of the month, that normally means the stores will not have it until then either. (As I have found out the hard way… not that a trip to the Apple store is ever that hard.)

Agreed. Oh please do not make me go to the Apple store… oh the torture! :-/

Peter Jones, another theme creator just sent me this blurb he found somewhere:

“iLife ‘09 includes iWeb ‘09 for authoring custom websites and iDVD ‘09 for creating DVDs. iWeb ‘09 adds new iWeb Widgets, such as iSight(R) video and photos, a countdown timer, YouTube video and RSS feeds. New integrated FTP publishing allows you to publish your website to virtually any hosting service and updates to your site can now be automatically added to your Facebook profile.”

This makes me believe that all themes WILL have to be rewritten to include the new features so again, please do not upgrade iLife without keeping your existing iWeb application icon somewhere OTHER than the Applications folder. Move it out of there before installing iLife 09.

The Apple site has updated… and lo and behold… they finally have “manage multiple sites” built in!!

It’s interesting to see what they choose to pursue for each release. These are definitely features geared toward the casual/family user. Drag and drop widgets – nice. Facebook integration – interesting. Multiple site FTP publishing is going to make boatloads of people very happy. Hooray! We’ll see if their FTP service has some of the little issues that RapidWeaver has had to work through over the months. FTP in this fashion has often been wrought with problems.

Is it me or does their theme gallery appear to be missing like 10 themes?

I just had to laugh when I read this post :-) The moment the keynote was over you put this online. Hehe

  6. Kari wrote:

I don’t think they are showing all the themes. If you look right below the link to the theme gallery, you see a sample using the travel template which is not shown in the gallery.

And I definitely agree that installing the new version without a “backup plan” if you need to move back is not a good idea. I like having a separate computer for testing new versions.

You know how it is Max… the minute iLife is released, I’m going to start getting emails ;-)

Suz! You know I’ll let you know as soon as I can when you’ll be able to pick a copy up! You forgot you have a inside link. LOL! :) I wish more cool things were released today, but hey, it’s a start.

It seems like they already are not caring about iWeb. Seems like an incredibly mild update to me.. It looks like the multiple website option is still within a single file.. Or did I miss something?

  10. Suzanne wrote:

Trina you should be careful – Steve doesn’t like you Apple folks patronizing us consumers.

Brian – I agree it is light considering the time they’ve had, but I’m guessing most of those programmers were dedicated to iPhoto and iMovie… really the backbone of iLife at this point. I wonder if they have some stat that indicates usership or something.

I would sooo love to see iWeb Pro… I wish Apple would also fix the sluggish galleries. They really don’t do well with very many pictures.

I hope iWeb sorts multiple sites – I’m fed up with manually copying a whole site for the slightest ammendment – especially when iDisk says it will take 9 hours!! usually it becomes less

  13. Suzanne wrote:

Peter, you might be in luck. Here’s an article Peter Jones sent me this morning which explains a bit more about the new FTP feature.
