Troubleshooting Theme Installation Problems

October 6, 2008

Here’s a quick list of issues that may be preventing the successful installation of your iWeb theme. There are no known issues with the installers themselves so be sure that none of the following situations are present on your own Mac.

1. You’re trying to install a 1.0 theme to iWeb 2.0

This is the most common problem and you’ll know you’re doing this if you’re getting an error that says something about can’t find templatesinfo.plist. Download the 2.0 version of the theme if you’re using iWeb 2.0.

2. You moved iWeb to somewhere other than the Applications folder

A lot of ex-PC users will do this – I did it too when I first switched to Mac… you move your applications into sub-folders of the Applications folder or move them somewhere entirely outside the Applications folder. iWeb must be located in the Applications folder during installation. You can move it back after installation.

3. You have iWeb 1.0 and iWeb 2.0 installed on your Mac

If you’re one of those clever folks that kept your version of iWeb 1.0 (like me) and you have both versions of iWeb located in the Applications folder, you have to move iWeb 1.0 somewhere else during installation of 2.0 themes. Apple did not specify a different internal application name for the new version of iWeb so the installer can’t tell the difference between the two and will try to install your theme into iWeb 1.0, not 2.0. You can move iWeb 1.0 back into the Applications folder after installation.

4. You’re not logged in as a computer administrator

Because the installer is copying files into an application, you must have administrator access to do this. Make sure you’re logged in as the admin and not a limited-use user to install themes.
