Well you might have seen this article in syndication today… I had no idea the icons were moving to a size of 512×512. Awesome! I went poking around and found this beauty hidden in the depths of the CoreServices folder. Ah… so glad that’s a part of my long, lost past! Now back to work!

  • I’ve already seen it. In my list of “Shared” devices anything that is windows based has that icon! I just hadn’t enlarged it enough to actually read the message on the screen. What a hoot!!

  • Have you taken a gander at some of the other app icons?

  • Yeah I noticed you could read the text in the icons now too. I found about 150 icons at the new size. I have them all in Pixadex already, but Pixadex doesn’t support icons at 512.

I wrote to The Icon Factory to see if they are planning to get an update out here soon. No word yet.

I’m really surprised at how many big software developers were NOT prepared for Leopard. It’s not like they didn’t have access to the software for development preparation.

  • UPDATE!

Just got word from Anthony over at The Icon Factory

    Hi Suzanne,

Yes, we have an update in the works which should be released by the end of the month. It will have full support for 512×512 icons.

We’ve already started updating many of our freeware sets at the Iconfactory in preparation, so if you want to download some 512×512 icons, you can see what we have available here:

Hope this helps, and thanks for taking the time to write!

    Regards,
    Anthony

  • Can you just IMAGINE the clip art implications??? Icons and clip art all in one! :) And with that nifty icon composer in the dev tools, anyone can now create icons of just about any image! I’ll have to try that out today with various and sundry bits and pieces.

  • Now if we could just get icon designers to move more into the commercial area. There’s a site called e-junkie.com that allows little people to set up digital sales for themselves. Icon designers should do this… offer their icons for use to others beyond the restrictive “personal use on your computer only”. It’s not hard to offer a variety of licenses - family web site license, blogger license, small commercial license, corporate license. You already trust that people aren’t using your icons in ways you don’t allow so you might as well give them expanded options for a fee and trust they purchase the correct license in that case as well.

I keep a library of over 11,000 icons, many of which I’d pay good money for, in order to use them in my blog.

  • If you have a really big monitor you can try this one:

It is possible to dramatically increase the Finder’s icon size, beyond the official 128×128 pixels. I tried it for the Desktop with the following command in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.finder DesktopViewOptions -dict IconSize -integer 256; killall Finder

To get back to normal on the desktop use the view options.

Why do this? Because we can… ,-)
