iWeb 2.0 Released August 8, 2007
First, please be aware that Apple released iLife ‘08 on August 8th, 2007. This version of iLife included an upgrade to iWeb, iWeb 2.0. Old Templates Do Not Work in 2.0
iWeb 2.0 has a new architecture so all iWeb theme designers must convert their 1.0 iWeb themes to work with the new, 2.0 architecture. At the time of writing, 11Mystics is in the process of converting all of its themes to the 2.0 format, but this process takes time. If you’re reading this sometime in the future, it’s likely this conversion process is complete. Please see the iWeb Themes page for more information about the status of each theme.
Changes To Page Layouts
Second, another very important piece of information to know is that, at the time of writing, we are no longer able to create custom layouts for template pages. In 1.0, the architecture allowed us to use a script to generate custom layouts from an existing site domain file, but this method no longer works in 2.0. Therefore the 2.0 versions of these themes do NOT include the custom layouts that were a part of the 1.0 themes. There is nothing we can do about that for now.
Note!
For more information about page layouts in 2.0 themes, please refer to the FAQ entry, Will The Layouts Be The Same In 2.0 Themes As They Were 1.0 Themes?
Importing Old Sites into 2.0
The last bit of info you should know is that importing your site into iWeb 2.0 will not necessary be trouble-free. Because the architecture changed so dramatically between iWeb 1.0 and iWeb 2.0, your old site won’t contain the new widgets that make 2.0 sites work.
Apple created a conversion mechanism to update sites that were made with their themes, but obviously they are not going to include the themes of any third-party theme designer in that conversion tool. Therefore, sites built with my themes, or any other third-party designer, will not update in 2.0 entirely. It’s primarily the navigation menu that will cause problems.
It’s suggested that after you import your site, you rebuild all of your pages using a 2.0 theme from Apple or a 2.0 version of my themes. That will ensure the pages are using the latest code and will publish properly (barring any iWeb bugs or .Mac issues - there are some).
