Why do umlautes or other special characters break my web pages?

August 28, 2007

I need to be brief today, but I wanted to get this information posted. Some web servers are not configured correctly to serve pages with special characters in them. This is not a bug in iWeb nor is it a bug in any theme - it’s directly realted to the web server you’re using and the way the host has configured it. You can call your web host and ask them to configure their servers correctly, but attempting to suggest that a UNIX admin failed to configure a server correctly is like asking to get mugged. Good luck if you try that approach ;-)

Tom Gweckie from the Apple iWeb forums has a great document to help you understand this situation. You should visit his site and read that.

Now, if you want an alternative to this situation, 11Mystics reader, Hardy from Hamburg, sent me this great tip for those of you that create iWeb sites in languages that contain umlautes and other special characters:

“Here is a better way to solve the problem with the umlaute. The benefit is, that changes only have to be made one time and not at every upload to the host. If other have the same problem with the word Eintråge, they only have to open the iWeb package (right click on the iWeb icon and select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu) and open the folder /contents/ressources/german.iproj). Then open the file “Localizable.strings”. Use the search option and search for Eintråge. Replace all instances of that with “Eintraege” or any other word you choose. After this re-start iWeb. Now iWeb will ask for the “Domain” file. Unless you store it somewhere else, it will be located at the path: ~user/Library/Application Support/iWeb. You never need to change anything in the future. Hope that helps - Hardy”

Thanks go to Hardy for sharing that wisdom! I really appreciate it when you all send me information like this because I have not had the time to investigate much of iWeb 2.0 yet. The template conversions are taking most my time. Please keep sending tips and tricks and I will include them in my FAQ or Tips & Tricks section (not yet created). Before long we’ll have a nice resource created that all will appreciate.

  • I just could not wait and went out and got iWeb 2. So far I’m liking it but one thing that I’m not sure about is this… I want to publish one of the pages in my website (just one) to a password protected folder on my web server (not a .Mac server) How do I go about doing this? I haven’t even published my site to a folder before so not sure how this is going to work and I don’t want to mess up the files already on the server… If anyone have any ideas or have done this before let me know.
    Thanks

  • I would ask this at the Apple iWeb forums Ann - I know you cannot use iWeb to password-protect the page when it’s NOT hosted at .Mac, but you can do it via some post-publishing. The folks at the forums will explain how.
