About This Article •
I’ll keep this one short and sweet. All Aerolite Collection customers and all Aerolite Aqua customers can now download the BETA version of this theme for iWeb 2.0.
Please log in to your store account and click on the Aerolite Collection link or the Aerolite Aqua Templates for iWeb link to download these files.
I have written a lot about the current limitations as far as making 2.0 themes so please review all the entries here in my blog, at least since the release day, August 7th. You may also post comments to discuss among yourselfs as well. I’m working to get Zones into beta so I can’t always respond immediately but there’s no reason you can’t help each other so please do that.
Your feedback is extremely important so if you download these files and start playing with these themes, please write to me with questions or bugs or suggestions. I want to find and fix everything now before I start duplicating these as master themes.
Thanks again everyone for your support and company during this conversion period. We’ll get through this in less than two weeks I suspect :)
Enjoy!
The files, when installed per instructions, hung iWeb 2.0. Had to force quit. Retried several times, same result. Also seemed to jam up my internet access but not sure the new files were the culprit. A restart solved the internet problem. Using a Mac Pro, 10.4.10. I’m reinstalling iWeb 2.0 now in order to get back to square one.
That was likely not the result of moving files into iWeb David so I wouldn’t bother reinstalling iWeb. It’s probably not necessary. Those files are benign - no self-contained functionality so it would be impossible for them to hang anything. It’s more likely that some other issue was already at play when you opened up the app.
One thing I have found when you open up packages and move things around, if you have not restarted your Mac in a while (or more correctly, relaunched Finder), Finder can get screwy. In the old iWeb, after moving files in and out to create the template downloads, I would routinely hang the system due after copying things X number of times. Relaunching Finder cleared all that up.
something odd happened once i installed the template. I’m not sure if its related or not. Normally there is a ” ” button in the bottom left side of iWeb that is used to add a new page. The button has disappeared! I can still click down in that area and a page is created, but the button is missing now. Very odd. Has this happened to anyone else?
You guys don’t have iWeb open when you’re doing this do you? Make sure it’s closed - not running - before you copy the files in. If you have it open during installation, it’s possible I suppose that what’s loaded into memory can get screwy. Reboot if something strange occurs like that and be very careful that you get the files into the right spots and that, in particular, the ThemeSortOrder.plist is configured correctly for the themes you just copied into place.
No. I didnt have the app open at the time of installing. Its a minor thing that I’ll look to sort out later. Bigger things to fix right now…like my entire site =)
I’ve been working with the Beta for a couple days now and I’ve noticed a few things that as a personal pref. I’d like to see different. I’ll keep those to myself. However, I would like to state that the font used on the “My Albums” page is fairly large. I’m referring to the font that is generated just below each album once its dragged and dropped. This creates some design problems if you choose to resize the albums area. The text begins to lay on top of one another if the title is more than 3 words long. I can work around this if needed. I was just giving feedback.
Funny you mentioned that. That caught my eye today too. I’ll take a look at it. I recall it being bold as well so it looked bulky to me. Thanks for the feedback - keep it coming.
Hi! Where exactly can I download the new beta version of Aerolite? I had purchased Aerolite red in the past and if I do not misunderstand, I can download the 2.0 update for free? Please show a link, I tried adding it to the cart but had no success. Thanks.
Red isn’t available yet Italo, only Aqua. Red should be available in another day however. If Aqua tests successfully, then I’ll duplicate it and create red late tomorrow. I want to give enough test time to Aqua though before I do that.
I wouldn’t mind trying aqua at the moment. Would I have to re-create my entire site?
Please let me know where the download link is for the aqua. I couldn’t find it. Thanks!
It you bought Aerolite Aqua or Aerolite Collection (which contains Aqua) you have access to the BETA. Silver, Sage, Red Orange and Ice will have access to it later today.
Zones Dark Orange should go into test today so anyone who bought that or Zones Collection will have access to that one. Once that one is clear of bugs, I’ll duplicate it and make the other colors.
Can i just ask as i am still not sure…
When red it released if i use iWeb 2.0 and install the Aerolite Red theme, will i be able to open my previously designed site as is or do i have to start from scratch in 2.0?
Hi Paul - opening your old site in iWeb 2.0 is (after you back it up first) something you CAN do. Make a back-up copy and try that. You can’t make any new pages for the site because you don’t have the template, but you can still open the site and monkey with it.
I would go read the Apple iWeb forums however and educate yourself on any of the problems associated with importing an old site and trying to use it in 2.0. I have not had the time to keep up with that conversation, but I hear there are some very frustrating problems.
When Aerolite Red or the other colors come out, you can then make new pages for your site, but I recommend rebuilding the entire site from the new template and tossing out your old version.
Why?
Because the old XML code from the old templates is missing some of the new code that makes things work properly. I don’t have specific examples, but I know from experience that if you want something to be totally compliant and trouble-free, you build it with the tools of the current framework and you DON’T try to adapt old stuff. It’s like trying to take a 1952 Harley and adapting it for the 2007 race track. It’s better to just build a new Harley with the latest tecnology and you undersand why.
Suzanne, your comment is very reasonable and thank you for your continous support. I will have to re-build my site once again (oh well, I do it once a year anyway!)..
Anyhow, what really discourages me is the fact that I have to start a new counter every time this happens. Is there a way to alter the number to start from the thousands again?
I don’t know of any easy way to do it, but you could tell all your friends to hit your site pages over and over to help get them back to where they’re supposed to be :)
The thing to do however, is encourage a guy at the Apple iWeb forums, Cyclosaurus, to figure out how to use the Apple images with StatCounter. Then you never have to rely on the Apple counters again.
Apple got clever when they saw people doing that in 1.0. It may not be possible in 2.0.
